The practice of deep work allows you to focus all your attention on one, commonly challenging, task free from all distraction, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to do. With the torrent of emails, notifications and forever increasing commitments, often we forgo the benefits of deep work so that our response times to messages are shorter and inboxes kept empty. Newport argues, through evidence and anecdotes, the benefits of deep work and how the practice of deep work improves not only the quality, but often the quantity of work that can be produced in a given time. Since implementing some of the practices I read about, I have found that dedicating periods of my day to deep work has simultaneously decreased the amount of time I would normally spend on tasks and improved the quality of work I can produce. This is a book I would recommend to anyone looking for a way to achieve a better work life balance without compromising on performance.
