The role & impact

You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the profession, acting not just as a participant in automation but as an architect of it. This position involves providing expert validation to ensure our models understand nuanced financial concepts, tax standards, and complex transaction logic that might otherwise be missed.

You will bring a rigorous quality assurance framework to the data pipeline, applying an audit mindset to identify edge cases and anomalies within complex tax scenarios. Acting as a translator between technical teams and intricate tax legislation, you will advise on structuring tax data taxonomies to ensure our AI tools remain compliant, accurate, and genuinely value-adding for professionals.

The team & how they connect

This centralised annotation team consists of AI annotators with deep backgrounds in financial accounting, currently expanding to include global tax experts. You will work alongside the wider data annotation team and engineering departments, serving as the human-in-the-loop to develop AI solutions within the Xero product.

The team is currently working on

  • Developing AI solutions within the Xero product ecosystem.
  • Designing annotation guidelines and advising engineering teams on financial data taxonomies.
  • Providing expert knowledge on financial accounting and tax tools to support machine learning initiatives
  • Identifying edge cases or anomalies in training sets to prevent bias or hallucinations in models.

Where and how you can work

We are hiring for this role in the UK. We offer flexible working arrangements, though you will need to manage your time effectively to collaborate across different time zones

Here are some of the things we are looking for

  • You bring in-practice experience in tax accounting, with a solid grasp of filing and tax return preparation
  • A professional accreditation such as ACA, ACCA, or equivalent is highly valued to underpin your technical knowledge.
  • You possess a deep understanding of debit and credit concepts and how they apply to day-to-day business finance.
  • Proficiency in English is essential for effective communication and for evaluating complex language model responses.
  • Your toolkit includes critical thinking skills and an audit mindset to problem-solve and ensure data integrity.
  • You demonstrate the ability to work autonomously and manage deliverables efficiently within a flexible environment.
