Entitled

May 30, 2021

All kinds of phenomena, from incels committing acts of murder to the undertreatment of women’s pain, can be traced back to the sense of entitlement men are often conditioned to feel, whether it be to power, knowledge and admiration, or care and bodily autonomy. This entitlement is what breeds men such as Harvey Weinstein and Brett Kavanaugh, and damages the careers and lives of people across the globe. This is not a problem that is solved by going after men, instead it is a problem that can begin to be addressed only when society as a whole looks at the societal and cultural ideas that perpetuate misogyny. In Entitled, Kate Manne dissects the implications of male privilege, with chapters ranging from the entitlement to consent to the entitlement to domestic labour. This is a must read for anyone looking to understand our society and why, after decades of feminism, we are still dealing with so much bias.
