Everyday Sexism is a book I believe every person should read at least once, as it not only gives a voice and validation to both women and men who are victims of sexism in their daily lives, but also speaks to the larger problem that society faces when it comes to equality.
Laura Bates started a website called everyday sexism in 2012, “hoping to gather 100 women’s stories”, but as the platform grew rapidly it became clear that everyone had at least one story to contribute, often many more. This book is the culmination of the thousands of entries and experiences of people across the world and is irrefutable proof that whilst we have come a long way from the time of the suffragettes, we still have a lot to fight for when it comes to inequality.
Personally, I found this book boosted my confidence, as I felt less alone in many of the problems I have faced. Whilst I do believe that everyone should be exposed to the issues that this book highlights, I think this book would be most beneficial to people who are dealing with their own instances of sexism that may be brushed off by others as ‘insignificant’ or ‘inconsequential.’
